You will be surprised how wrong we can be in our collective assumptions — and how much we don’t know about what others are thinking, or why they are doing what they do behind the scenes.
Poll results relying on “Big Data” can be wrong and yet most of the times, we are convinced of the wisdom of the crowd, even when the crowd sentiment can be ‘manipulated’.
In my coaching practice, I always advise all to listen hard for insights and distinctions. The more distinctions you have around things, the more power you have over your next best move.
This better enables them to not only understand, but fight more effectively when they must. And, there are gurus who always suggests that executives read regularly five publications a month that they would never think of reading otherwise. My humble suggestion is to read and understand the time-tested Chinese manuscript called Yijing (I Ching) – the book of all Universal Principles.
Most people studied Yijing (I Ching) for its predictive prowess (or otherwise called divination), yet very few realised that the true power lies with the insights derived from the Universal Principles it holds that allows one to see through the veils of the actions or behaviours of people. There is a deeper place to go to and that place is the ‘why’ the people are doing what they are doing and not just what they do – the intention.
Part of it, of course, is about the importance of knowing one’s enemy. But the other part is the importance of knowing that others feel and think completely differently from you, and that they feel their points of view are just as legitimate as you think yours are.
When you have that upper hand, you are in a better position to choose your next best response. Remember this –
One who choose the right response to the situation controls the game of life!
And this is the power of the Art of Maneuvering.
